The war on Micro Plastics

Microplastics in cosmetics and how we can replace them with a sustainable alternative in soap?

Plastic & microplastics

The use of plastic has skyrocketed since the 1950s and continues to increase. Plastic is cheap, durable, and has endless applications. However, in recent years, it has become increasingly clear that versatile plastic also has a downside. Plastic has become a symbol of environmental pollution. Not only on the streets but also the vast ocean is full of plastic, with the ultimate example being a floating plastic garbage patch later known as the 'plastic soup.'

Microplastics are small, solid plastic particles (<5 millimeters) that are non-biodegradable and insoluble in water. They are found in personal care products and end up in the sewage system along with wastewater. Because microplastics are smaller than 5 millimeters, it is impossible for our water purification systems to filter them out, leading them to rivers and oceans. As a result, microplastics are absorbed into the tissues of fish and other river and sea creatures. They can also enter the human food chain.

Microplastics lurk in cosmetics, but change is underway. While microbeads vanish, other forms persist. Let's opt for cleaner skincare, for a healthier planet.

For many brands, this is the reason to completely ban microplastics from their (care) products. Brands that do not use microplastics can receive the Zero Plastic Inside label. The label comes from Beatthemicrobead.org and is only for companies that share their ingredient list with the organization and sign the '100% microplastic-free' declaration.

How is this relevant to Barbaar?

Cosmetic products such as soaps or shampoos often contain microplastics and microbeads.Microbeads are small beads with a cleansing and scrubbing effect. Fortunately, most major manufacturers have stopped adding microbeads because it has been revealed that the consequences are very harmful to the environment. However, many skincare products still contain many other types of microplastics.

Why does the manufacturer choose to use microplastics?

Some reasons include: to make the shampoo more washable, to cleanse the scalp more thoroughly, shampoo with microplastics can have a fixing effect on the hair, keeping it in place in a certain way, it provides stability in the substance and makes the shampoo foam more.

We create a natural scrub in our soaps by working with natural ingredients such as coffee grounds, ground oats, or herbs, etc. A hand soap, shower soap, or shampoo bar made according to the cold method is completely free of microplastics, and nature provides a handful of alternatives to gently scrub our skin. So, goodbye to plastic in all its forms!
